Guyana Is Building a Power System to Match Its Oil Boom

In this visual explainer, the GELI Research Team maps how Guyana plans to turn offshore gas into cheaper electricity through power plants, transmission lines, solar farms, and gas-based industries.

Guyana's Wales gas plant is set to deliver its first power in December. Offshore gas from the Stabroek Block will start replacing the heavy fuel oil and diesel the grid runs on today, as peak demand rises almost as fast as new capacity.

In August 2026 (last updated October 2026), the GELI Research Team mapped the projects behind that shift, from the Wales plant and a new Wales-to-Berbice transmission line to solar farms, battery storage, and the industries that depend on cheaper electricity. The series also separates what has been delivered from what is still only targeted, including the government's promise to cut power bills by as much as half.
