Guyana Has More Oil Blocks Than Takers

In this visual explainer, the GELI Research Team tracks every offshore block Guyana put up for license in 2022, who won them, which contracts were signed, and what could return to market before a second bid round.

Nearly four years after Guyana launched its first competitive licensing round, only two of the 14 blocks on offer have a signed production sharing agreement. Six more were awarded but never contracted, six never drew a bid, and Stabroek, the country’s only producing block, still runs on the 2016 terms the new round was built to improve on.

In October 2026, the GELI Research Team laid out the full picture: who holds what, how the new contract terms compare with Stabroek’s, and which blocks could be offered again. The series also follows the government’s path to a second round, which has no date yet.
